The Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co has been developing high impact resistant PVC compound resins, with tests done by the National Test Center for Polymer and Chemical Building Materials showing an impact strength that is 14 times that of ordinary PVC resins.

The high impact resistant PVC compound resins use cheap vinyl chloride to replace expensive methyl methacrylate as the monomer, which is good enough to use in place of top imported ACR, CPE and MBS, and could be used for pipes, bars, valves, manhole covers, containers, cargo pallets, electrical appliances, and vehicle safety levers.

The products have passed provincial and ministerial tests and have won third place in national science and technology progress awards. The company got an invention patent for them in 2011.

It began work on high impact resistant PVC compound resins in 2008, in cooperation with the Hebei University of Technology and, after more than four years of research, developed the resins of today, which have an annual output of 50,000 tons.

Liu Wenxian, the Hebei Shenghua GM, says he is proud of the product, and pointing to some pallets, told visitors, “These are made of high impact resistant PVC compound resin that we developed and are produced mainly by calcium powder mixed with a small amount of high impact resistant PVC. This could greatly reduce production costs, while increasing strength and toughness.”

Liu said all of the manhole covers in the company, more than 700 in all, are made of this material and not only take the weight of heavy trucks, but also help cut the noise level and prevent theft, because they’re not made of iron or other metals.
